Who doesn’t love biriyani, there are such hardcore fans of biriyani they can eat biriyani all the day, for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

If you can make such a delicious meal during your lazy weekends, it’s like a  biryani therapy to charge your soul.

We can make pressure cooker mutton biriyani’s in many ways, here is my quick version and don’t underestimate the taste, its tastes as delicious as the Dindigul talapakatti biriyani.

I suggest not to replace mutton with chicken, this recipe is at its best with mutton.

Pressure Cooker Mutton Biriyani | Quick Biriyani Recipe

  • Mutton 500g
  • Rice 1½ Cup ( Seeraga Samba Rice or Basmati)
  • Curd 1 Cup
  • Red Chili Powder 1 Tsp
  • Salt 1½ Tsp
  • Ginger Garlic Paste 1 Tbsp
  • Water 1½ Cup ( Depends on Mutton Stock)
  • Oil 2 Tbsp
  • Ghee 2 Tbsp
  • Bay leaf 2
Chop or Paste
  • Onion 2 Large
  • Tomato 2 Large
  • Coriander leaves 1 cup
  • Pudina leaves ½ Cup
  • Green Chili 4
Garam Masala
  • Fennel seeds / Saunf 1 Tbsp
  • Cumin seeds 1 Tsp
  • Star Anise 1
  • Mace 1
  • Cinnamon Stick 2 Inch
  • Cloves 4
  • Cardamom 5
Mutton Stock
  • Oil 1 Tsp
  • Turmeric ¼ Tsp
  • Red Chili Powder ½ Tsp
  • Salt ½ Tsp
  • Water 1 Cup
Mutton Stock
  1. Clean & wash the mutton pieces well.
  2. In a pressure pan, cook the mutton pieces with the ingredients mentioned under mutton stock section
  3. Cook till mutton gets tender, I have cooked on high flame for the first whistle and 10 to 15 mins in medium flame, time varies as per tenderness in meat.
  1. Meanwhile mutton is on Pressure cooker
  2. Make a coarse paste of onions and tomatoes.
  3. Combine Green chili, coriander and pudina leaves make the coarse paste.
Garam masala
  1. Dry roast the Garam masalas and make a powder.
  1. Wash the rice, drain the water and keep it aside.
Make Biriyani
  1. By this mutton would have cooked, Drain the stock from the mutton and reserve.
  2. In the same pressure cooker, add Oil and Ghee, once it's heated up add bay leaf.
  3. Add Onions and Ginger, garlic paste fry in medium flame until the raw smell disappears.
  4. Add tomatoes, fry till they are cooked well.
  5. Add Green Chili, Pudina and Coriander Paste, combine well, Once the oil separates out from the masala, add 1 tsp red chilly powder, ¼ Tsp turmeric and fry for 2 more mins.
  6. Add yogurt and combine.
  7. Now add the rice and fry for a minute.
  8. Now add boiled mutton pieces, measure and the mutton stock ( In total we are adding 1:2 cup of water)
  9. After adding the mutton stock, add water. ( I have got 1½ cup mutton stock so, I have added 1½ cup water)
  10. Add 1½ Tsp salt
  11. Close the cooker lid & pressure cook the biryani in high flame for one whistle and simmer for 5 to 7 mins.
  12. Open the lid, after full steam goes away.
  13. Fluff the biryani gently with a ladle.
  14. Now tasty Mutton Biryani is ready.
